So someone you know recommended a low calorie diet. But what exactly does that mean? Put simply, it’s a diet that reduces the typical person’s daily calorie intake from about 2000 to around 900-1300. As unpleasant as it may sound, this is necessary to lose those unsightly pounds.Calories, incidentally, are basically units of energy. Think of it as the body’s jet fuel: Without it, you’re not getting off the ground. Now think of fat as the body’s reserve fuel supply. Just as the jet will not tap into the reserve until the regular supply is exhausted, your body will only start to burn fat when the calorie intake is sufficiently low.

Before you begin your low calorie diet, visit a bookstore and find a good calorie counter. This helpful tool will list thousands of foods, telling about their calorie and fat amounts. This book will quickly become a trusted advisor, as it helps you plan what to eat.

Despite using a low calorie diet you will still need to eat a healthy and a nutritious diet in order to stay healthy. Don’t rush your low calorie diet and never starve yourself; you will only end up making yourself ill this way.

So what should be part of a healthy diet? Three staples must always be present. We call these carbohydrates, proteins, and fats - and even as you lower your calorie your intake, you must keep these in a good balance. Let’s look at carbs, for instance. Since there are four calories in a gram of carbohydrates, a balanced meal will consist of about 60 percent carbs.

Proteins are amino acids which are vital to staying fit and healthy and maintain a nutritious diet. For every gram of protein there are again 4 calories. You should try to make up at least 15% of your low calorie diet of proteins.

When you start a low calorie diet; it is essential you keep a diary of everything that you eat and how much you eat of it. Be honest as well, when you miss out a few biscuits or a few snacks here and there from your diary you are only cheating yourself.

As well as a healthy and a nutritious diet, you should begin to start exercising as well. It’s very important to seek medical advice before exercising particularly if you are not used to exercising. Take it slow at first and maybe just go for a walk around the block. Each time you go for a walk make it that little bit longer or walk that little bit faster. Eventually you may find yourself jogging! You could begin to go to the gym and seek the advice of a personal trainer. They will come up with a personalized plan that gets you doing the best you can.
