So someone you know recommended a low calorie diet. But what exactly does that mean? Put simply, it’s a diet that reduces the typical person’s daily calorie intake from about 2000 to around 900-1300. As unpleasant as it may sound, this is necessary to lose those unsightly pounds.Calories, incidentally, are basically units of energy. Think of it as the body’s jet fuel: Without it, you’re not getting off the ground. Now think of fat as the body’s reserve fuel supply. Just as the jet will not tap into the reserve until the regular supply is exhausted, your body will only start to burn fat when the calorie intake is sufficiently low.

the safer path to burning more calories

So you’ve decided you’re going to lose weight. It should be simple, right? You’ll just skip a couple meals a day and do 500 pushups a day. You have to shed some pounds that way, right? Wrong. In the real world, it’s just not that simple, because if you don’t have a better-thought-out plan than that, you’re body will actually fight against you in order to keep the stores of fat it has set aside for the future.

by Kevin Prott

A good rule of thumb is to start by following the guidelines below:

Change the size and number of your daily meals. No longer will you eat three big meals a day. Under the new diet, eat five or six smaller meals and snacks throughout the day.
